Electrolysis is the only form of hair removal considered permanent by the FDA. It involves inserting a fine probe along the hair shaft to the base of a follicle and delivering an electrical current to remove one hair at a time; and is therefore not indicated for large surface areas where laser hair removal is preferred. Electrolysis was first performed in 1875. There are 3 forms of electrolysis. Galvanic electrolysis uses only direct current (DC). Thermolysis uses an alternating current (AC).
